Acupuncture Auckland

Chinese, Japanese and Korean acupuncture at two clinics

Acupuncture at Premier Wellness is one practitioner, one room, one hour — not needles left in while somebody attends to the next patient. Our acupuncturists are ACC registered and trained in traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean styles, at Glenfield on the North Shore and Orewa on the Hibiscus Coast.

Cost and cover

What acupuncture costs at our Auckland clinics

Standard acupuncture with traditional Chinese medicine is $45 with ACC or $100 private. Acupuncture combined with manual therapy and shiatsu is $65 with ACC or $130 private, and cosmetic acupuncture is $160.

ACC covers acupuncture for an injury with a claim, and we can lodge the claim at your first appointment — no GP referral needed. Southern Cross members can claim acupuncture too, but it is claimed separately rather than through Easy-Claim. Packages of 3, 5 or 10 private sessions save 5–15%. Full details are on our prices page.

How we practise

What acupuncture treats, and how we use it

Acupuncture uses very fine needles at specific points to change how the body regulates pain, tension and stress. Most people are surprised by how little they feel — the needles are about the width of a hair, and the usual sensation is a dull heaviness rather than a sharp one.

It is used most often for pain that has not settled with hands-on treatment alone, for headaches and migraines, for sleep and stress, and for women’s health complaints. We will tell you honestly if we think another approach in the building would serve you better.

Your acupuncturist stays with you for the whole appointment. That matters: the needles get adjusted, extra points are added if you need them, and somebody is there if anything feels off.

Styles and treatments

Chinese acupuncture Auckland, Japanese and Korean styles

Traditional Chinese acupuncturePulse and tongue diagnosis, then a point prescription built around your whole presentation rather than the sore spot alone.
Japanese acupunctureA gentler technique using very shallow needling, often combined with manual therapy and shiatsu in the same session.
Korean-style acupunctureAnother tradition our TCM acupuncturist draws on, particularly for constitutional and pain presentations.
CuppingGlass cups used to lift and decompress tight tissue, especially through the back and shoulders. Marks fade within a few days.
MoxibustionGentle heat from burning mugwort over a point or area, used for cold, stiff or long-standing complaints.
Acupressure, needle-freeThe same point work done with hands, for people who genuinely do not want needles. It is a real option, not a lesser one.
Cosmetic and facial acupunctureFine needles used on the face to stimulate circulation and collagen, in a course rather than a one-off.
Shiatsu massageJapanese pressure-point bodywork, available with our Japanese-trained practitioner alongside acupuncture.

Gwen is, without a doubt, one of the best acupuncturists I’ve ever known. For years, I saw her exceptional skills and her relevant approach to taking care of patients in a way that truly made a difference.

★★★★★

Since it was my first time trying acupuncture, I was filled with anxiety. However, the treatment Yoshi provided was completely painless… Rather than focusing only on the painful area, he treated my whole body and worked to identify the root cause.

Your first visit

Searching for an acupuncturist near me? Your first appointment

What actually happens, for anyone who has never had needles before.

  1. A proper case history

Your main complaint, plus sleep, digestion, energy and stress, because they inform the diagnosis.

  2. Diagnosis

Pulse and tongue assessment in the Chinese tradition, or palpation-led assessment in the Japanese tradition.

  3. Treatment

Needles placed and adjusted, with cupping, moxibustion or hands-on work where it helps. You rest while they do their job.

  4. A plan

An honest estimate of how many sessions your problem should need, and what we would expect to change first.

Common questions

Acupuncture Auckland — your questions answered

Anything else? Call 09 444 3231.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Rarely. The needles are roughly the width of a hair, and most people feel a brief prick at most, then a dull, heavy or warm sensation that settles quickly. If anything is uncomfortable, say so and your acupuncturist will adjust it on the spot.
Is acupuncture covered by ACC in New Zealand?
Yes, for injury-related problems — but an acupuncturist cannot open a new ACC claim. If you already have an ACC claim number, bring it with you. If you do not, book with one of our osteopaths or physios first and they will lodge the claim for you, then your acupuncture is covered under it. Once a claim is open, ACC allows up to 12 acupuncture treatments over 12 weeks. Any surcharge is listed on our prices page.
Is acupuncture the same as dry needling?
No. Dry needling, which our physios call Western Medicine Acupuncture, targets trigger points in muscle and is used alongside manual therapy. Acupuncture is a complete system of diagnosis and treatment based on Chinese and Japanese medicine, and your acupuncturist stays with you throughout.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
Recent problems often respond in three to five sessions. Long-standing conditions usually need a course spread over several weeks. You should notice something changing within the first few visits, and we will tell you if acupuncture is not the right tool for your problem.
What is the difference between your two acupuncture styles?
Traditional Chinese acupuncture uses pulse and tongue diagnosis with a point prescription for your whole presentation. Japanese acupuncture is gentler and more palpation-led, with shallower needling, and is often combined with manual therapy and shiatsu. Both are ACC registered.
Can acupuncture be combined with osteopathy or massage?
Yes, and it often is. Acupuncture sits alongside osteopathy, physio and massage in the same clinics, so treatment can be combined or sequenced rather than duplicated.
Do you offer cosmetic or facial acupuncture in Auckland?
Yes. Cosmetic acupuncture uses fine needles on the face to stimulate circulation and collagen, with no injectables and no downtime. It works as a course rather than a single session.
Which Auckland clinic should I book for acupuncture?
Both Glenfield and Orewa offer acupuncture. Glenfield suits the North Shore, Orewa suits the Hibiscus Coast. Our practitioners work across the two, so book whichever is closer and we will sort the rest.
