Neck pain treatment

Neck pain treatment at Glenfield

Neck pain is rarely only about the neck. The upper back, shoulder blades and ribs all contribute, and treating the neck alone is why some people improve for two days and then go straight back to where they started.

Most of what we see at Glenfield is mechanical: stiffness that limits turning, pain between the shoulder blades, and headaches that start at the base of the skull. Whiplash after a car accident is the other common one, and that is ACC-covered.

You are treated at the first appointment, with a plan for what to change between visits.

What is causing it

Types of neck pain patients bring us

What your neck is doing usually points at which of these it is.

Desk and device neck

Aching that builds through the working day, worse by Thursday, eased by the weekend. The most common presentation we see. More on work injuries.

Whiplash after an accident

Neck pain, stiffness and headache in the days after a car accident. ACC-covered, and better treated early than left to settle on its own.

Waking with a locked neck

The neck that will not turn one way after sleeping awkwardly. Dramatic, uncomfortable, and usually one of the quickest to improve.

Neck-related headaches

Headaches that start at the base of the skull and spread over one side. More on headaches and migraines.

Nerve pain into the arm

Neck pain with pins and needles, numbness or weakness down the arm, from irritation at a nerve root.

Jaw pain with neck pain

The two travel together often. Jaw clicking, clenching and grinding are covered on our TMJ and jaw pain page.

Warning signs

When neck pain needs urgent medical care

Most neck pain can be treated directly. A few presentations are not and need medical assessment the same day rather than an appointment with us.

Go to an emergency department if neck pain follows a significant head or neck injury, or comes with a severe sudden headache, fever and a stiff neck you cannot bend forward, weakness or clumsiness in the hands, or problems with balance, speech or swallowing.

How our neck pain team treats it

Four approaches in one building. Necks often do best with two of them used together.

Osteopathy for neck pain

Hands-on treatment of the neck, upper back and ribs together, because the upper back and ribs often contribute.

What treatment looks like

How we treat neck pain, step by step

Necks usually improve quickly. What takes longer is making sure they stay improved.

  1. Find the source

Assessment of the neck, upper back, shoulders and jaw, because the painful spot is often not the origin.

  2. Reduce the pain

Hands-on treatment to ease muscular guarding and restore movement.

  3. Restore control

Exercises for the deep neck and shoulder blade muscles, which is what stops the stiffness returning each week.

  4. Fix the driver

Desk set-up, phone habits, sleeping position and pillow — the things doing it to you eight hours a day.

Between appointments

Easing neck pain at home

Heat suits most stiff necks better than ice, ten minutes at a time. Keep the neck moving gently through the range you have rather than holding it still, which stiffens it further.

Your pillow matters more for necks than for backs. One pillow that fills the gap between your head and the mattress, not two stacked. Our guide to choosing a pillow goes through it, and sleeping positions covers the rest.

At a desk, raise the screen so the top is at eye level and bring the phone up instead of dropping your head to it. Small changes, repeated all day, beat any stretch.

Common questions

Neck pain North Shore — your questions answered

Anything else? Call 09 444 3231.

Is neck pain treatment covered by ACC?
Yes, if it came from an accident — including whiplash from a car accident. We lodge the claim at your first appointment without a GP referral. Neck pain that built up gradually is not an ACC injury, but Southern Cross members can use Easy-Claim for osteopathy and massage.
How many sessions will I need for neck pain?
It depends on how long it has been there and what is driving it; we give you an honest estimate at your first appointment. Long-standing stiffness, or pain driven by a desk set-up, takes longer because the cause is still there for eight hours a day.
Can you treat whiplash after a car accident?
Yes, and earlier is better. Treatment focuses on keeping the neck moving while the tissues heal. It is an ACC claim, which we lodge for you at the first appointment.
Do you treat jaw pain and TMJ as well?
Yes, though it now has its own page since jaw pain often needs different treatment from neck pain. See TMJ and jaw pain. If you have both, tell us when booking and we will assess the two together.
Can neck problems cause headaches?
Often. Headaches that start at the base of the skull and spread over one side are frequently coming from the upper neck joints and muscles, and they respond well to treating the neck. See headaches and migraines.
Should I see an osteopath or physio for neck pain?
Osteopathy suits necks that are stiff and guarded, because the upper back and ribs get treated with them. Physiotherapy suits necks where control and strength are the issue, or where you need a programme. Both are at Glenfield and you can switch.
Why does my neck hurt more at the end of the working day?
Because it is a load problem rather than damage. Hours of holding your head forward fatigues the muscles that support it. Treatment helps, but changing your screen height, breaks and phone habits is what stops it recurring.
