Osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy in one session for accident injuries, with Akiko Nobuhara, a registered osteopath. 45 minutes, $65 with an ACC claim, at our Glenfield and Orewa clinics.
Not from a massage therapist. ACC does not fund massage therapists, but it does fund registered osteopaths. Akiko Nobuhara is a registered osteopath with more than 15 years of hands-on experience, including remedial massage, so for an injury caused by an accident she can give you hands-on treatment that combines osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy, funded by ACC. You pay $65 for a 45-minute session and ACC pays the rest. You do not need a GP referral.
When people ring us asking for ACC massage, they usually want firm, hands-on work on a sore back, neck or shoulder after an injury. That is what this appointment is. The difference is who gives it. ACC funds treatment from registered health professionals such as osteopaths, physios and chiropractors. It does not fund massage therapists.
Akiko is a registered osteopath with more than 15 years of hands-on experience. She began in 2011 working as a manual therapist in hospitals in Japan, then trained in remedial massage in Australia and went on to complete a Master of Osteopathic Medicine. Her sessions are a combination of osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy, given by a registered osteopath, so ACC can cover them.
ACC covers injuries caused by an accident. These are the ones we see most.
A back that went while lifting, gardening or moving furniture, and has stayed tight and sore since.
Stiffness and muscle pain after whiplash, once a doctor has checked you if that was needed.
Calf, hamstring, shoulder and ankle injuries from training, a game or a misstep.
Strains from lifting, carrying, or a slip or trip at work.
Strained, bruised muscles after a fall, once anything broken has been ruled out.
An accident injury that is past the first few days but still tight, sore and getting in the way.
Every session is 45 minutes with Akiko. This is how the time is used.
Akiko asks how the injury happened and how it feels now, then checks how you move. Your first visit takes a little longer, and if you do not have an ACC claim yet she lodges it then.
Hands-on work on the injured area: deep tissue and trigger point massage, myofascial release, stretching and manual therapy techniques. You stay in control of the pressure throughout.
If a stiff joint is part of the problem, Akiko may add gentle joint mobilisation. She explains anything before she does it.
You leave with simple stretches or exercises to do at home, and her estimate of how many sessions you are likely to need.
A few things worth knowing before you book.
It has to be an accident injury. ACC covers injuries caused by an accident, such as a fall, a sports injury or lifting something awkwardly. If your pain came on slowly with no accident, ACC usually will not cover it. In that case a regular massage or an osteopathy appointment is the better booking.
It is treatment, not a relaxation massage. Akiko focuses on the injured area and how it is healing. If you want a full-body or relaxation massage, book one of our massage therapists. They are Southern Cross Easy-Claim registered, but massage therapists cannot claim ACC.
Some injuries need more than hands-on care. If Akiko thinks you should see your GP, for example for a possible fracture or nerve symptoms that are getting worse, she will tell you.
You may be sore for a day or two after firm work, a bit like after a hard workout. If anything feels sharp during the session, tell Akiko and she will change what she is doing.
No GP visit, no paperwork for you to fill in beforehand.
Book online at Glenfield or Orewa, or call 09 444 3231. On our booking page, choose Akiko and the ACC Massage appointment. You do not need to see a GP first.
When and where it happened, and what you were doing. If you already have an ACC claim number from your GP or another clinic, bring that too.
If you do not have a claim yet, Akiko lodges it with ACC at your first visit. It takes a few minutes.
You pay $65 on the day for each 45-minute session. ACC pays the rest of the fee directly to us.
