Built for the way the Hibiscus Coast actually moves

The Hibiscus Coast isn't your average suburb. It's a stretch of coastline where weekend mornings start with a surf at Orewa Beach, where Whangaparaoa peninsula's bush trails fill with runners by 6am, where Silverdale gym memberships sit alongside school drop-offs at Millwater, and where a strong retired community keeps walking, swimming and golfing well past traditional retirement age.

Premier Wellness Orewa is built for exactly this rhythm. Our physiotherapy treats the injuries this coast actually gets — surf-shoulder, runner's knee, post-paddleboard back pain, gym overload, post-surgical knee and hip rehab, pregnancy-related pelvic pain, and the gradual joint and balance issues that come with a long active life.

And because we share the building with osteopaths, acupuncturists and massage therapists, your physiotherapist can refer you across the corridor when something else would help — not back into another waiting list.

A Premier Wellness Orewa Specialty

Dry needling at our Orewa physio clinic

Dry needling is one of the most effective tools we offer for releasing stubborn muscle tension, calming overactive trigger points and accelerating recovery. Available as part of physiotherapy treatment at Premier Wellness Orewa.

What is dry needling? Dry needling uses very fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture-style needles inserted directly into trigger points or tight muscle bands. Unlike acupuncture (which works through traditional Chinese meridian theory), dry needling is grounded in modern Western anatomy and neuromuscular science — targeting the specific muscle fibres causing your pain or restriction.

What does it feel like? Most patients describe a brief twitch or cramping sensation as the needle reaches the trigger point — often followed by a noticeable release. The needles themselves are barely felt going in. Sessions take just a few minutes as part of a wider physiotherapy appointment.

Why it works: By directly stimulating tight muscle bands, dry needling helps reduce local pain, improve blood flow, decrease muscle tightness and restore normal movement patterns — often producing change in tissues that have not responded to manual therapy or stretching alone.

🎯

Targeted relief

Goes directly to the trigger point, releasing tension that hands-on work alone may not reach.

Fast acting

Many patients feel a noticeable change in the same session, often with reduced pain and improved range.

🤝

Combined approach

Used alongside manual therapy and exercise prescription — not as a standalone treatment.

🏥

ACC funded

When part of ACC-eligible injury treatment, dry needling is included in your funded physiotherapy session.

Conditions where dry needling helps most
Chronic neck and upper-trap tension from desk work
Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches
Lower back muscle spasm and lumbar trigger points
Glute and hip-stabiliser tightness affecting runners
Calf tightness and plantar fasciitis presentations
Shoulder rotator cuff and rhomboid tension
Forearm and wrist overuse from manual work
CrossFit-related muscle tightness and recovery
Post-injury muscle guarding that limits rehab progress
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. They use similar-looking needles, but dry needling is based on Western anatomy, neuromuscular science and trigger-point theory — targeting specific muscle bands. Acupuncture is grounded in Traditional Chinese Medicine and follows meridian-based theory. Both have their place, and Premier Wellness Orewa offers both. Dry needling is delivered as part of physiotherapy; acupuncture is delivered by our TCM-trained acupuncturists at the same clinic.
Does dry needling hurt?
Most patients describe a brief, sharp cramp or twitch when the needle reaches the trigger point — often followed by a noticeable release of tension. The needles themselves are extremely fine and barely felt going in. Some mild post-treatment soreness for 12–24 hours is normal and a sign the muscle has responded.
Will ACC cover dry needling at Premier Wellness Orewa?
When dry needling is delivered as part of ACC-eligible physiotherapy treatment for an injury, it is included in your funded physiotherapy session — no extra fee. For non-injury or chronic presentations not covered by ACC, dry needling is part of standard physiotherapy fees.
