ACC Without the Runaround: No GP Referral, and Exactly What You’ll Pay
Most people think an ACC claim starts with a trip to the doctor. It doesn’t. Here is how ACC actually works for osteopathy, physio and acupuncture in New Zealand — and what it costs you.
1You Do Not Need to See a Doctor First

This is the single most common misunderstanding we hear at reception, and it costs people both time and money.
Osteopaths, physiotherapists and acupuncturists registered with ACC are treatment providers in their own right. That means we can assess your injury, diagnose it, and lodge a brand-new ACC claim ourselves, at your first appointment. No GP visit. No referral letter. No waiting for an appointment somewhere else first.
You can book directly and have the claim sorted the same day you are seen.
2What ACC Actually Covers
ACC covers accidental injury. That is broader than most people assume. It includes:
- Obvious accidents — falls, sprains, sports injuries, car accidents
- Injuries that happened at work, including gradual process claims such as repetitive strain
- Injuries where you cannot point to a dramatic moment, but something clearly gave way — lifting, twisting, a sudden movement
- Re-injury or aggravation of a previously accepted claim
What it generally does not cover is gradual wear and illness — arthritic change that has crept in over years, or pain that built slowly with no identifiable incident or work cause.
The boundary is not always obvious, and honestly, it is not always intuitive. We will assess your situation and tell you plainly whether we think it qualifies. If it does not, we will say so rather than lodging a claim that gets declined.
3What You Will Actually Pay
ACC does not make treatment free. It pays a contribution toward each visit, and you pay the remainder — known as the part-charge.
The difference is substantial. Across osteopathy, physio and acupuncture, the ACC part-charge is typically around half the private fee, and on some appointments less than half.
Exact fees vary by practitioner and treatment type, so rather than list them here we keep every current figure in one place. You will find them all on our prices page, and reception will confirm your exact cost when you book.
If your injury qualifies, ACC funding applies automatically from your first visit. You do not need to do anything to activate it.

4How the First Appointment Works

There is no special ACC process to navigate. It happens inside a normal appointment:
- Book online or call — no referral, no paperwork in advance
- Bring photo ID or your NHI number if you have it — it speeds the lodgement up, but we can work without it
- We take a full history and assess you — this is what establishes whether it is an accidental injury
- We lodge the claim electronically during the appointment
- You are treated the same visit and pay the ACC part-charge on the way out
Claims are usually accepted within a day or two. If it is declined — which is uncommon when we have assessed it as accidental — we will talk you through the options.
5CareWay, Southern Cross and Afterpay
ACC is not the only funding route.
- CareWay — we are a registered CareWay provider. For eligible knee, shoulder and lower back injuries this can mean treatment is fully funded with no part-charge at all.
- Southern Cross Easy-Claim — if you hold eligible cover, we can claim on the spot so you are not out of pocket waiting for a reimbursement.
- Afterpay — available if you would rather spread the cost of a treatment plan.
Reception will work out which of these you qualify for. It is worth asking — people are frequently eligible for more than they realise.
ACC — Common Questions
Do I really not need a GP referral?
Correct. ACC-registered osteopaths, physios and acupuncturists can lodge new claims directly. A GP referral is not required for any of our services, and adding one only delays your treatment.
How long do I have to lodge a claim after an injury?
There is no hard cut-off, but sooner is considerably easier. Once months have passed it becomes harder to establish the link between the incident and your symptoms, and claims are more likely to be questioned.
Is RSI from my desk job covered?
Possibly, as a work-related gradual process claim. These are assessed differently from sudden injuries and need a demonstrable link to specific work tasks. We can assess whether yours is likely to meet the criteria.
What if my claim gets declined?
You can still be treated privately, and you have the right to seek a review of the decision. We will explain why we think it was declined and what your options are. In practice, declines are uncommon when the injury is genuinely accidental.
Can I use ACC at both your clinics?
Yes. Your claim follows you, not the clinic. You can be seen at Glenfield one week and Orewa the next, and with different practitioners, all under the same claim.
