Slow, firm work into the deeper layers of muscle for tension that has built up over months — not a quick fix, but often what finally shifts it.
If you have been searching for deep tissue massage near me, it helps to know what you are booking. Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. It targets areas that have tightened over a long time, such as the neck and shoulders of a desk worker, a stiff lower back, or tight hips and glutes.
Deep does not mean as hard as possible. Good deep tissue work goes slowly enough for the muscle to let go, rather than forcing through it. You will feel pressure, and tight spots can be uncomfortable, but it should never feel sharp.
Tension from screens, posture and stress that settles across the upper back and neck.
Ongoing tightness in the lower back and hips, once anything more serious has been ruled out.
Tradies, nurses, parents and anyone lifting, carrying or on their feet all day.
Tight neck and shoulder muscles that feed into headaches at the base of the skull.
Heavy legs and tight shoulders from running, gym or team sport.
Raised shoulders, a clenched jaw and a back that never quite relaxes.
A firmer massage is not always the better one.
If you have a new injury, sharp or shooting pain, numbness, pins and needles, or pain that is getting worse, start with an assessment from a physio or osteopath instead. Both are ACC registered at our clinics and you do not need a GP referral.
We will adjust or avoid deep work if you bruise easily, take blood thinners, are pregnant, have a skin condition in the area, or have had recent surgery. Let us know about any of these when you book.
It is normal to feel a little tender for a day or two afterwards, like after a workout. Bruising is not a sign that the massage worked, and a good therapist will not leave you bruised.
We ask where you feel tight, how long it has been there, and what makes it worse.
Your therapist warms the area up first, then works more slowly and deeply into the muscles that need it. They check the pressure with you as they go, and you can ask for lighter or firmer at any time.
Sessions run 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. For one area, such as the neck and shoulders, 30 to 45 minutes is often enough. For the whole back and legs, allow an hour or more. Prices are on our prices page. Drink water afterwards and go easy on the area that evening.

Injured in an accident?
ACC does not fund massage therapists, but it does fund registered osteopaths. If your pain started with an accident, our osteopath Akiko Nobuhara can treat you under ACC. Her sessions are a combination of osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy, given by a registered osteopath, so ACC can cover them. No GP referral needed.
ACC does not fund massage therapists, but our osteopath Akiko offers ACC massage for accident injuries: $65 for 45 minutes. If your pain started with an accident or injury, an ACC-registered physio or osteopath can see you under ACC, with no GP referral needed. We are a Southern Cross Easy-Claim provider for massage and claim at the time of payment, subject to your policy. Afterpay is available over four fortnightly payments, and we also accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa and Mastercard. Prices are on our prices page.
