What it is

What deep tissue massage actually is

If you have been searching for deep tissue massage near me, it helps to know what you are booking. Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. It targets areas that have tightened over a long time, such as the neck and shoulders of a desk worker, a stiff lower back, or tight hips and glutes.

Deep does not mean as hard as possible. Good deep tissue work goes slowly enough for the muscle to let go, rather than forcing through it. You will feel pressure, and tight spots can be uncomfortable, but it should never feel sharp.

When deep tissue massage is not the right choice

A firmer massage is not always the better one.

If you have a new injury, sharp or shooting pain, numbness, pins and needles, or pain that is getting worse, start with an assessment from a physio or osteopath instead. Both are ACC registered at our clinics and you do not need a GP referral.

We will adjust or avoid deep work if you bruise easily, take blood thinners, are pregnant, have a skin condition in the area, or have had recent surgery. Let us know about any of these when you book.

It is normal to feel a little tender for a day or two afterwards, like after a workout. Bruising is not a sign that the massage worked, and a good therapist will not leave you bruised.

Your appointment

What a deep tissue massage Auckland session involves

We ask where you feel tight, how long it has been there, and what makes it worse.

Your therapist warms the area up first, then works more slowly and deeply into the muscles that need it. They check the pressure with you as they go, and you can ask for lighter or firmer at any time.

Sessions run 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. For one area, such as the neck and shoulders, 30 to 45 minutes is often enough. For the whole back and legs, allow an hour or more. Prices are on our prices page. Drink water afterwards and go easy on the area that evening.

Injured in an accident?

Your treatment can be covered by ACC

ACC does not fund massage therapists, but it does fund registered osteopaths. If your pain started with an accident, our osteopath Akiko Nobuhara can treat you under ACC. Her sessions are a combination of osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy, given by a registered osteopath, so ACC can cover them. No GP referral needed.

Common questions

Deep tissue massage — your questions answered

Is there a deep tissue massage near me on the North Shore or Hibiscus Coast? ▼
Yes. We offer deep tissue massage at Unit 2, 1 View Road, Glenfield, and at 1-19 Cammish Lane, Orewa. Both clinics have free on-site parking and are open six days, including Saturdays.
Does deep tissue massage hurt? ▼
It is firmer than a relaxation massage and tight spots can be uncomfortable, but it should never feel sharp. Tell your therapist if it does and they will change the pressure.
How often should I have a deep tissue massage? ▼
For long-standing tension, a short series one to two weeks apart often works better than a single session. Once things settle, every four to six weeks is common.
What is the difference between deep tissue and remedial massage? ▼
They overlap a lot. Remedial massage is chosen to treat a specific problem and often includes deep tissue techniques. Deep tissue massage describes the pressure and depth of the work. Your therapist will use whatever suits you.
Is deep tissue massage covered by ACC? ▼
Not when it is given by a massage therapist. But if your pain started with an accident, our osteopath Akiko Nobuhara can treat you under ACC with ACC massage: sessions that combine osteopathy, massage therapy and manual therapy, 45 minutes, $65 with an ACC claim and no GP referral needed.
Can I claim deep tissue massage on Southern Cross? ▼
Yes. We are Southern Cross Easy-Claim registered for massage and process the claim at reception while you are still in the clinic, subject to your policy.
