Osteopathy During Pregnancy Auckland

Your body is doing something extraordinary.
It deserves extraordinary support.

Pregnancy transforms your body in ways nothing else does. The ligaments loosen, the pelvis shifts, the centre of gravity migrates forward, the lumbar spine compensates — and all of this happens across just nine months. For many women, the result is pelvic girdle pain, back ache, sciatica, rib restriction, SPD and sleep-disrupting discomfort that no amount of rest seems to resolve.

Osteopathy during pregnancy is specifically designed for exactly this. Using gentle, hands-on techniques adapted for each trimester, our Auckland pregnancy osteopaths restore balance to the musculoskeletal system — relieving pain, improving alignment and preparing your body for labour, without any of the high-force techniques that aren't appropriate in pregnancy.

With four experienced osteopaths across our Glenfield North Shore and Orewa Hibiscus Coast clinics, Premier Wellness is Auckland's most comprehensive pregnancy osteopathy team.

  • Gentle, adapted techniques safe at every trimester
  • Pelvic alignment, sacral balance and nerve decompression
  • Rib, thoracic and diaphragm release
  • Pelvic floor and core guidance
  • Labour preparation — optimising pelvic mechanics
  • Postnatal recovery and postural restoration
  • ACC registered — no GP referral needed

What We Treat

Pregnancy conditions our Auckland osteopaths treat every day

From the common to the complex — our pregnancy osteopaths have seen and treated it all.

🦴
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)

The most common pregnancy complaint at Premier Wellness. As the pelvis widens and ligaments relax under the influence of relaxin, the sacroiliac joints and pubic symphysis can become unstable and painful. Osteopathic treatment restores balance and reduces pain significantly.

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)

Pain at the front of the pelvis, often described as a sharp or burning sensation that worsens with walking, climbing stairs or turning in bed. SPD is highly responsive to osteopathic treatment — many patients experience significant relief within one to two sessions.

🔄
Lower Back Pain & Sciatica

Postural changes in pregnancy place enormous strain on the lumbar spine. Osteopathy addresses the structural drivers of lower back pain and sciatic nerve compression — providing relief that physical rest alone cannot achieve.

🫁
Rib Pain & Heartburn

As the uterus rises and the diaphragm is compressed, rib flare and thoracic restriction become common. Gentle rib and diaphragm release reduces intercostal pain and can markedly improve heartburn and acid reflux — as reported by many of our pregnant patients.

🏋️
Round Ligament Pain

Sharp, stabbing pain in the lower abdomen or groin caused by rapid stretching of the round ligaments supporting the uterus. Osteopathic techniques reduce tension on these ligaments and surrounding soft tissues, offering genuine relief.

🤱
Labour Preparation & Postnatal

In the final trimester, osteopathy works to optimise pelvic mechanics — balancing the bony, ligamentous and muscular structures to support the baby's engagement and descent. After birth, postnatal osteopathy addresses the structural aftermath of delivery and the demands of new parenthood.

What to Expect

Your first pregnancy osteopathy appointment at Premier Wellness

A thorough, unhurried and fully adapted consultation — from the moment you book to the moment you leave feeling better.

1
Comprehensive Assessment

Your osteopath takes a full history — your pregnancy stage, symptoms, previous injuries and overall health. No detail is too small. This is where the connections are made.

2
Postural & Structural Analysis

A standing and movement assessment identifies how your body is adapting to pregnancy — where compensation is occurring and what's driving your symptoms.

3
Gentle Hands-On Treatment

Safe, adapted osteopathic techniques — soft tissue, articulation, sacral balancing and gentle mobilisation. No high-velocity manipulation. Always within your comfort zone.

4
Your Home Programme

Specific exercises, postural advice and lifestyle guidance tailored to your trimester — empowering you to maintain the improvements between sessions.

Highly recommend to pregnant women, particularly if you struggle with acid reflux — I didn't even know this could be fixed. I haven't had any reflux issues since then! The team at Premier Wellness are friendly, professional, caring, and excellent at what they do. Cannot recommend enough.

I visited Anna at Premier Wellness right throughout my pregnancy. She helped me get through the uncomfortable months and prepare me for the birth of my 4th baby. I'm now 4 months postpartum with back pain — Anna has given me exercises and a treatment plan. I feel reassured when I visit. I wish I knew about visiting an osteopath with my first 3 pregnancies. Life changing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pregnancy osteopathy Auckland — your questions answered

Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Osteopathy is safe and gentle during pregnancy when performed by a registered osteopath experienced in prenatal care. Our osteopaths use specifically adapted techniques appropriate to each trimester — no high-velocity thrusting, no techniques contraindicated in pregnancy. Treatment is suitable from the first trimester through to the final days before birth.
What conditions does pregnancy osteopathy treat?
Pregnancy osteopathy at Premier Wellness treats pelvic girdle pain (PGP), symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), lower back pain, sciatica and piriformis syndrome, rib pain and thoracic restriction, round ligament pain, heartburn and acid reflux related to postural compression, postural changes and neck pain, and preparation of the pelvis for labour. Postnatal treatment also addresses diastasis recti, back pain from feeding and the structural aftermath of delivery.
Is pregnancy osteopathy covered by ACC in Auckland?
Yes. Premier Wellness is ACC registered. If your pregnancy-related condition connects to a previous injury or accident, osteopathic treatment may be subsidised through ACC. Our osteopaths can issue a new ACC claim at your first appointment — no GP referral required. Contact us on 09 444 3231 to discuss your situation before booking.
When should I start osteopathy during pregnancy?
You can start at any stage — including the first trimester. Many patients come in early to establish good alignment before symptoms develop. Others start when specific pain arises. We recommend not waiting until symptoms are severe — the earlier we can address the structural changes of pregnancy, the more effectively we can prevent them from compounding.
How many sessions of pregnancy osteopathy will I need?
This depends on your symptoms and how far along your pregnancy is. Many patients experience significant relief in one to three sessions. Others benefit from regular maintenance treatment — monthly or fortnightly — throughout their pregnancy to keep pace with the ongoing structural changes. Your osteopath will give you a realistic expectation at your first appointment.
Can I combine pregnancy osteopathy with pregnancy massage?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Osteopathy addresses structure — joints, nerves and alignment. Pregnancy massage addresses soft tissue — muscles, swelling and relaxation. Together they deliver more comprehensive pregnancy care than either alone. Both are available at Premier Wellness Glenfield and Orewa. Ask us about combining both when you book.
Which Auckland clinic should I book for pregnancy osteopathy?
Choose whichever suits you best. Glenfield (North Shore) is open from 7am weekdays with four osteopaths. Orewa (Hibiscus Coast) is open Monday to Saturday including Saturdays, with Hamish and Anna. If you're not sure which osteopath to book, call us on 09 444 3231 — we'll help match you to the right practitioner.
