Baby osteopathy on Auckland's North Shore

Birth is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body can undergo — for both mother and baby. Even straightforward deliveries place significant compressive and rotational forces on a newborn's head, neck and spine. For many babies, these birth-related tensions resolve naturally within days. For others, they contribute to colic, reflux, feeding difficulties, sleep problems and unsettled behaviour that can persist for weeks or months without treatment.

At Premier Wellness Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore, our experienced team provides specialist gentle cranial osteopathy for newborns and infants from birth. Treatment uses an extraordinarily light touch — often barely perceptible to parents watching — to release the tensions held in the baby's cranial bones, neck, spine and soft tissues, allowing the nervous system to settle and the body to function as it should.

Our North Shore baby osteopathy clinic sees infants from across the region — Albany, Takapuna, Birkenhead, Northcote, Forrest Hill, Sunnynook and further afield. Many parents are referred to us by midwives, Plunket nurses and paediatricians. No referral is required — you can book directly online or by calling 09 444 3231.

Six ways we treat baby & infant conditions

Our multidisciplinary team uses six evidence-based modalities and can combine them for faster, more lasting results.

🦴

Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy for babies uses an extremely light touch to release the compressive and rotational tensions held in the cranial bones, sacrum and soft tissues after birth. Treatment restores the natural rhythmic motion of the craniosacral system, allowing the nervous system to settle and the body to function optimally. Suitable from the first day of life.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is not typically used for newborns or young infants. For older babies and toddlers where appropriate, acupuncture or acupressure points may be incorporated as a gentle complement to osteopathic treatment for specific conditions including digestive issues and sleep.

Massage Therapy

Infant massage taught to parents can be a powerful complement to clinical treatment for colic, constipation and unsettled babies. Our practitioners can teach parents specific massage techniques to use at home between appointments — empowering families to continue care beyond the clinic.

Physiotherapy

For developmental concerns — delayed milestones, motor development issues or neurological considerations — paediatric physiotherapy provides targeted assessment and exercise-based intervention. We work alongside paediatricians and other specialists as needed.

Functional Medicine

For infants with complex gut issues, food allergies or inflammatory conditions, functional medicine assessment of the mother's gut health and dietary patterns can be relevant — particularly for breastfed babies where maternal diet directly affects the infant.

Nutrition

Nutritional support for breastfeeding mothers directly impacts infant gut health, colic risk and immune development. Our nutritionists support postnatal mothers with dietary optimisation for breastfeeding, managing infant food allergies through elimination protocols, and introduction of solids.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your first appointment at our Glenfield or Orewa clinic.

Is osteopathy safe for newborn babies?
Yes. Cranial osteopathy for newborns uses a pressure no greater than the weight of a small coin — it is one of the most gentle therapeutic interventions available. Our practitioners are trained specifically in paediatric cranial osteopathy and have extensive experience treating babies from birth. Treatment is completely safe and many babies find it deeply calming — often falling asleep during the session.
How many treatments will my baby need?
Most babies respond within 2–4 sessions. Many parents notice improvement after the first or second treatment. The number of sessions depends on the severity and duration of symptoms — a baby with mild post-birth tension may need only 2 sessions, while a baby with established colic or feeding difficulties may benefit from 4–6 sessions. Your practitioner will give a realistic expectation at the first appointment.
What age can babies start osteopathy?
From birth. There is no minimum age — we regularly treat babies in their first week of life. The sooner birth-related tensions are addressed, the faster they resolve. We also treat toddlers and children up to school age and beyond for a range of developmental and musculoskeletal concerns.
My baby cries during and after treatment — is that normal?
Some babies cry during treatment — this is normal and does not mean they are in distress or pain. Cranial osteopathy can initially stir up unsettled sensations as tensions begin to release. Many parents notice their baby is more settled within 24–48 hours after an initial period of fussiness. If you have any concerns, contact us and we will advise.
